Research
Combining the two areas of my academic background - education and applied linguistics - I seek to address language issues that have an impact on educational trajectories, outcome, provision, and policies. I am particularly interested in bi- and multilingualism, heritage languages, institutional and societal language hierarchies, instructed second language acquisition, ideologies, and multilingual identity construction. I usually explore these topics through qualitative research in situ in interviews and ethnographic classroom observations, or by applying visual methods to capture the non-linearity of individuals' linguistic biographies and to avoid (mis)categorization.
My second focus is on school leadership in comparative and international education. Together with experts from diverse academic backgrounds and seven country contexts, we have created an open access virtual learning platform based on teaching case studies to improve training opportunities for pre- and in-service school leaders (and educators) and to provide a network for international exchange and collaboration. The website can be accessed at globalleadershipineducation.com.
